Controversy and the Construction of Methodological Puzzles in Sociology
When the achievements of the social sciences are presented, they are often attributed to individual researchers. However, the driving force behind such progress is not solely the work of a single scholar but also that of the broader scientific community. A crucial, yet frequently overlooked, aspect of this community is the quality of communication among its members. We identify a weakness in this area, particularly concerning the critical assessment and evaluation of findings generated in separate projects that rely on divergent research approaches, especially when these projects address related topics.
In this book, we seek to clarify these disagreements. Through a theoretical review, reconstruction, and extension of central literature, we develop a framework for analysing such controversies and apply it to cases of scholarly conflicts. By examining the theoretical and methodological components that shape these situated research practices, we aim to demonstrate both the necessity of and the potential for stronger reflection and innovation to enhance scientific communication. Thus, the outline presented in the book can serve as a program for studies of situated practices in any research community by revealing the dispersion of paradigms and possible collective cultures of inquiry.
